ANCHOR HANDLING TUG SUPPLY VESSEL – ICEBREAKER
The Vidar Viking is an icebreaker and anchor handling tug.
She is owned and operated by a Norwegian company, Trans Viking, but she is registered in Sweden. She has two sister ships, the Tor Viking and the Balder Viking . She has been employed supplying offshore arctic petroleum drilling expedition.
Each of the 3 ships ("Vidar Viking", "Balder Viking" and "Tor Viking") has been upgraded with a LowNoise tunnel thruster in the bow to increase crew comfort.

1 x FU80 LRC 2000 880 kW LowNoise Tunnel Thruster
1 x AR63 LNC 1650 880 kW Retractable Azimuth Thruster
1 x FU37 LTC 1000 230 kW Heeling Compensation Pump
1 x FU63 LTC 1750 880 kW Tunnel Thruster
In late January 2010 the Swedish Maritime Administration called for the Vidar Viking and the Tor Viking to serve as icebreakers in the Baltic Sea.The vessels are chartered on a contingency bases - where Trans Viking's parent company, Transatlantic, pays a basic flat fee for the vessels to be available, within ten days, without regard to whether they are used. Their previous usage was in 2007. The contract expires in 2015.
Offshore and icebreaking are core segments for Viking Supply Ships AS. These 3 ships were built as combined icebreakers and Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels. In winter they operate as icebreakers and for the rest of the year as AHTS.
